Gyirmót FC Győr started this year well, with Zsolt Tamási's team picking up four points in two league games.
The MOL Hungarian Cup on Wednesday at 17:00 we see us travel to Gyirmót FC Győr. Our opponent is playing in the NB II league and after 17 rounds is in the mid-table.
Between 2016 and 2022, we played Gyirmót a total of six times in the NB I and beat them five times with one draw, meaning we have never lost to them in the top division, with a goal difference of 15-3.
We have also met them once in the Hungarian Cup, but we don't have good memories of that, as in the 2006/2007 season - as defending champions - they knocked us out in the last 32 in an unbelievable encounter. In normal time it ended 3-3, with Brazilian fan favourite Julinho equalising in the 89th minute (the other two goals were scored by Attila Kuttor in normal time). In the 2x15 minute extra time Gyirmót were leading 5-3, with Sitku's goal in the 120th minute only adding the final touch The disappointing defeat was not without consequences, Aurél Csertői was sacked after the match and replaced by Marijan Vlak. Now, after almost two decades, it's payback time.
But it will not be easy for our young team, as Gyirmót FC Győr started 2025 very well. They won 4-0 at home against Soroksár, and in the previous round they stole 1 point from Mezőkövesd.
We have already met our Wednesday opponents in a training match this season, last year we won 3-0 against them in the Sóstó during the national team break in September, thanks to goals from M. Kovács, Stefanelli and Szabó.
Our opponents include many players who have played for Vidi before. András Hársfalvi is one of the team's mainstays, having started 15 times for Gyirmót in this year's NB II championship. Martin Hudák, Milán Papp, Olivér Cserkuti-Németh, Dominik Kovács (who played for Vidi between 2013 and 2016) and Zsolt Gajdos, who not only have a decades-long friendship with our captain Csaba Spandler, but are also brothers-in-law.
Another interesting fact is that Gergő Ominger's twin brother, Bence Ominger, played for Gyirmót in the autumn, but he is no longer a Gyirmót player, having transferred to Csákvár in the winter and already made his debut for his new team last Sunday in the 2-1 away win against BVSC.
In this season's MOL Hungarian Cup, Gyirmót FC Győr reached the last 16 after beating two lower teams. Gyirmót beat BKV Előre 5-1 away, while ESMTK, who beat Gyirmót in 2023, won 3-1 at home.
