Diosgyor led with two early goals before a spirited fightback from Videoton, but in the end luck shone on the home side.
Exactly 5 years to the day since Videoton won their second league cup against Pecs, the red and blues found themselves once again in the final of the same competition. This was the seventh ever league cup final and the fifth time that Videoton were one of the participating sides.
Vidi looked to control things early on without a real chance in front of either goal. Then the breakthrough came for the home team on 9 minutes. Husic pulled away on the left wing, before crossing the ball into the middle for Futacs, who backheeled the ball in to the path of Kostic, and he found the bottom left corner of the net (1-0). Vidi were still trying to come to terms with the early setback when Diosgyor doubled their lead on 12 minutes. Futacs kept himself onside and took the ball towards goal before calmly beating Calatayud with a powerful shot to the far corner. (2-0).
Vitor Gomes had a long range shot after 18 minutes, which went wide of the goal, while nine minutes later, Nikolics released Zé Luis with a good pass, with the powerful forward beating two defenders and finally shooting from a tight angle at keeper Rados, who saved his shot. Zé Luis flicked a ball on after 32 minutes, which ended up at Nikolics, whose first attempt on goal did not find its target, but the second was stopped by Rados. Gosztonyi then crossed in to the middle for the Miskolc side, and Husic slid in to shoot on goal with the ball going just wide of the post. The final chance of the first half saw Juhasz heading powerfully from close range, which produced a great save from Rados. Videoton tried very hard to score a consolation after their two early conceded goals.
It was the home team that created the first chance of the second half. Grumic, who came on at half time, crossed to the centre and the ball ended up with Husic, who from 13 meters out volleyed just wide. The game was played at a good pace and also at a high quality. Vidi attacked as often as they could, while the home side were happy to sit on their two goal lead. They relied on hitting dangerous counter attacks instead as they sat back. A corner from Alvarez on 57 minutes was headed at goal by Sandor, but again the impressive Rados saved the chance. Gosztonyi had another good chance for DVTK from 18 meters, and his powerful strike was dealt with well by Calatayud. Things improved for Videoton with 20 minutes remaining. They came back into the match with a consolation goal. Alvarez curled a free kick towards the far post and Juhasz slid in to find the back of the net. (2-1). Nikolics had another attempt on Rados' goal after 75 minutes, and from a tight angle lifted the ball towards goal, but one of the home defenders headed the ball off the line.
Haraszti came on as a substitute and after 78 minutes, he cut inside and shot at goal from 15 meters out, but once again Rados was in the right place with a brave save. Bacsa showed pace and ran at goal but he could not beat Calatayud, who saved really well as the excitement of the cup final continued.
Luck and in the end time ran out and it was DVTK who won the league cup. Videoton have been in 5 cup finals since the start of the league cup, and remain the most successful team in the competitions history.
